How to Make Wontons

Learn how to make these fried pork and crab wontons as an appetizer for your next party. Served with a little chili sauce and these are bound to be a favorite.

-Hey, everyone. I'm Judith. Well today, we'll be making one of my favorites, Pork and Crab Wontons. That's right. Really delicious. So, what you'll need is 1/2 pound of lump crab meat, broken into small pieces; 1/2 pound of ground pork; 1/2 cup of chopped scallion; 1/4 cup of chopped fresh mint leaves; 1 tablespoon of finely grated and peeled fresh ginger; 1 tablespoon of soy sauce; 1 tablespoon of sesame oil; cornstarch, for the baking sweet-- sheet; 52 wonton wrappers; 1 large egg, beaten; 8 cups of vegetable oil; and, 1 cup of purchased sweet red chili sauce. That's going to be a lovely garnish for our wontons. All right, so first of all, what I want to do is on a medium heat here in our large pan next to us, I'm going to add in our oil because what we want to do is get that really hot for a minute to fry. So, in that goes all of our oils for cooking and we're just going to let that get hot. Meanwhile, in another bowl, we're going to combine our pork and our crab; our scallions, we'll just use the green part of our green onions-- the scallions. And, our fresh mint; ginger goes in there too; soy sauce; sesame oil. All those lovely flavors are just absolutely adorable. In all in one bowl and then we're going to give it a good mix. So, we'll mix it all together. Okay, set that aside a moment. We have a baking sheet here. We're just going to lightly flour it with some corn flour and we'll set that aside for a little bit later. Very good. Okay, so on a clean work surface, we're going to get our wonton wrappers-- wonton papers. Now, you can find this mostly at any-- any big store, maybe in the ethnic section. Usually, they sell them. So, these are little wonton papers. And, we're going to work 4 by 4 wonton papers at a time, 4 batch sheets at a time. Put them on there. Get a little teaspoon of our mixture and we're just going to put that in the middle of our wonton paper like that. Then, let's get our beaten egg. So, with a little pastry brush, dip it in the egg and we're just going to go around the edges of our wonton papers so to help it stick. And then, we do a little folds in a little triangle which is why try not to put too much of your mixture in your wonton paper. We'll fold like that and just with your fingers, you can press that down to close it. Perfect. And we're going to place that on our floured baking dish over there. So, we're going to repeat this with all of our wonton papers. So, in goes a little teaspoon of that mixture in there. Then, around the edges with our eggy mixture. Fold in a triangle. Press it down with your fingers and just make sure it gets sealed in like so. Perfect. All right. So, we'll repeat those steps with our remaining wonton papers. All right, well we've wrapped all of our wontons now and our oil should be hot enough. If you want to check, it should be about 360-degrees Fahrenheit overall temperature and hot enough to deep fry. So, we're going to work in batches of 8 and we're just going to place our wontons into the oil. Let them get nice and golden brown un-- until, you know, it's cooked through at about 2 minutes, 2 minutes per batch. So, in it goes It does not take too long to cook. Give them a little turn over as well. Now, make sure you line the plate with some paper towels so that that's ready-- when our wontons are ready, they can soak up that excess oil on to that. Beautiful. And these are just great to serve up at parties when you have friends over. It's really a great snack. And with that chili dipping sauce, it's going to go really well. All right, wontons are done. They're crispy golden brown and ready to serve up now with that little bit of chili sauce right there. Serve it up at a party when your friends come over and that is the perfect snack. So, that's how you make Crab and Pork Wontons.
