How to Make Yeast Rolls

Homemade rolls are always more lovely and delicious. Learn how to make these yeast rolls for your next family dinner and you may not ever by premade again!

-Hey, everyone. I'm Judith. Well today, we'll be making Cheddar and Onion Yeast Rolls from scratch, homemade, lovely and more delicious. So, what you'll need is 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, divided; 1 cup of finely chopped onion; 1 package of active dry yeast; 1/2 cup of sugar, divided; 1-1/2 cups of warm milk, divided; 1 large egg; 1 cup of shredded Cheddar cheese; 1 teaspoon of salt; 4-3/4 cups of bread flour; and, 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. So, what we wanted do to start is in a skillet next to us, get that hot. And, we're going to put in 2 tablespoons of our oil. So, I'll put that there. Let that get nice and hot and we're going to add in all the onions. Now, we want to let the onion saute until they're nice and soft and translucent. So, we just want to get them tender. All right, so our onions are now done. They've been sauteing for about 5 minutes. They're nice, translucent and tender. Now, we're going to add in our onions to our milk. Now, we've set aside 1/2 cup of warm milk. And, we're just going to add those in right there. And, we're going to let that stand for 5 minutes. All right, so now, let's get our remaining ingredients. So, with our remaining milk, we're going to add in our egg; all of our sugar goes in there too; the oil; our cheddar cheese; and, our salt. Give that a good stir. Break up that egg a little bit. Once that's all in, we're then going to add in our onions and our yeast mixture. Of course, yeast will help it to rise. Stir those in. Now, gradually bit by bit, we're going to add in our flour. Obviously, we want to get a nice dough to create these little rolls that we're making. So, we're just going add oil. And bit by bit, we'll fold that flour in to our mixture until we get the consistency that we want. All right, so now, it's starting to thicken and becoming more like a dough which we want. So, when it starts to become like that, you can get your hands in and add the flour so it's easier to maneuver with your hands. It's still a little bit sticky so we'll keep adding that flour until we get a good consistency. So, once we have more of a dough with our mixture, we're then going to set it on to our cutting board. So, lightly flour your cutting board like so and let's transfer this mixture. And then, we're going to get our muscles going and do some kneading. So, this is the-- the part where we want to get it to a really nice doughy consistency until it's nice and elastic. So, we're going to just knead that. And, if you need to add more flour, that's fine too. But, let's get in there with your hands and use your muscles until we got a nice consistency. Let's do a good amount of kneading and that is now a nice consistency that we want. Lovely. Soft and elastic. Great. So, in a greased bowl, we'll just slightly grease a bowl right here. We're going to place our doughy mixture into that. And, we're going to loosely cover that. And, we're going to let that rest in a dry place where there's no drafts for about an hour until it's doubled and bulk. So, in an hour, we'll come back to it. Well, it's been an hour and our dough has risen as you can see. So, that is looking great. Now, we're just going to actually punch that dough down a little bit more like so and we're going to cover that again just loosely and let that rest for 10 minutes. So now, we have sprayed our muffin tin with some cooking spray. You can also use little muffin-- little paper muffin sheets as well. But, we're going to use a muffin tin. And now, our dough should be done. It's been there for about 10 minutes. And what we'll going to do is we're going to form little 1-inch balls with our lovely elasticky dough. And we're going to put about 3 in each little muffin tin. So, that is a good size ball there. One. The second one goes in there. And, another one. So, we have finished our little cheese and onion balls. We've rolled them up into 3 little doughy balls. Put them into each muffin tin. And now, we're going to let them rest in a warm place to let them rise. So, make sure you cover them. Keep them in a warm place away from any drafts for about 1 hour. So, our little bread rolls have been resting for about an hour and they have risen again. So now, we are just going to do our last touches. And, we are going to sprinkle this Parmesan cheese that we had evenly on each muffin. And, that's just going to melt on the top and it's just going to be so, so tasty. This is going to be a great accompaniment to any meal or dish. So, on that goes. Perfect. Nice and generous for the cheese. So, that is going to bake in the oven for about 10-12 minutes at 350-degrees Fahrenheit. So, our rolls have been baking for about 10 minutes in the oven. They are ready now. Lovely lightly golden brown on top and soft inside. So, you can serve that out with your favorite entree or dinner and they're good to go. So, there you go.
