How to Make Homemade Chili

A favorite on a cold winter's day, this homemade chili recipe will warm you right up. This comfort food is great for parties or as an any time meal.

Hi everyone, I'm Judith. Well today, I'll be showing you how to make Bryan Hansen's famous chili recipe. One of the my favorites to eat on a cold winter's day, so what you'll need for this is 2 pounds of lean ground beef, 1 large yellow onion, chopped, 1 large green sweet pepper, chopped, 2 gloves of garlic, minced, 2 15 ounce cans of chili beans with chili gravy, 2 14-1/2 ounce cans of diced tomatoes, 3 cups of tomato juice, 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of crushed red pepper, 2 teaspoons of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper, shredded cheddar cheese is optional and toasted garlic Parmesan bread is also optional. Nice little bread to have without chili. Anyway, first of all in a Dutch oven or a very large pot, we want to get it to a medium heat. I'm going to add in a ground beef, our onion goes in that 2 with the beef, a pepper, and a garlic. So, those 3 things are gonna cook up first. So, we want to get the ground beef brown so that should take about 10 minutes until the ground beef is brown and the onions are nice and tender. You can put the cover on to help it keep the heat in and cook quicker so beef has browned nicely. The onions and pepper is nice and tender, so now it's time to add in the remaining ingredients. So in goes our undrained chili beans. Now, you can use any type of beans if you want for this. I like to use a mixture of pinto beans, kidney beans, you can even use black beans if you want. It goes really, really well and goes tomato sauce in that and chopped tomatoes are gonna go on that too. All right, so our pepper, our salt and then all of our lovely spices, which is gonna give our chili a good kick. Make sure this is--- and obviously if you like it a little bit more spicier, you can have a little bit more chili and I like that sugar just to give it the sweetness at the end. So let's give that a good stir. We're gonna bring it to a boil, stirring all those lovely flavors. Oh, that's looking good already. Fantastic! Now once it approached to a boil, we're then gonna reduce the heat and we are gonna let it simmer with the lid on for about 30 minutes. So, our chili has been simmering for about 30 minutes that's thickened up beautifully and it is looking very good and smells fantastic too. So, that now is ready to serve up. So in it goes-- beautiful. And that with a little bit of shredded cheese and toasted Parmesan-- It's just fantastic. Great for parties, great to serve up on a cold winter's day, really comforting.
