Snake Cake

A cake mix makes the snake's body for this reptilian dessert. Green frosting and yellow candy eyes complete this fun party treat that also makes a great birthday cake.

  • 1   box 
    (18.25 ounces) yellow or devil's food cake mix
  • 2   cans 
    (16 ounces each) vanilla frosting
    Green icing
    Yellow icing
  • 2   
    yellow M&M's
  • 1   
    red fruit-leather strip, such as Fruit by the Foot
  • 1   cup 
    sweetened coconut
Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan. Using pound-cake variation on side of box (add instant pudding and 1 extra egg), prepare cake mix according to package directions, and bake in pan.
Spoon 2/3 cup vanilla frosting into a freezer-weight resealable plastic bag, and snip off a small corner. Using green icing color and adding a few drops of yellow, tint remaining vanilla frosting bright, light green. Transfer 1/3 cup green icing to a small bowl, set aside. Turn out cake, and cut into quarters.
Place cake quarters on platter, alternating pieces to create wiggly snake, as shown below. Attach pieces together with green frosting. Cut small wedges from one end of cake to create pointed head of snake. Frost entire cake with green icing. Place 2 yellow M&M's on head for eyes. Cut red fruit leather to create tongue, and place in mouth.
Using white frosting in bag, pipe random white spots on body of snake. Pipe small white stripes on yellow eyes for pupils. Add green icing color to green frosting in small bowl to make it darker green. Spoon into a freezer-weight resealable plastic bag, and snip off small corner. Pipe dark-green outlines around white spots on snake's body. Pipe 2 dots on face for nose. In bowl, toss together coconut, green icing color, and a few drops of water to dye coconut green. Sprinkle around cake for grass.
