Picadillo Pita Wedges
Garlic, onion, tomatoes, and meat are the basic picadillo quartet. This appetizer dip builds on those flavors by adding heart-healthy olives, almonds, and raisins.

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 16-ounce jar salsa

1/2 cup raisins

1/4 cup chopped pimiento-stuffed olives

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds

Directions

In a large skillet, brown beef over medium heat. Drain off fat. In a 3 1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker, stir together cooked beef, the onion, garlic, salsa, raisins, olives, vinegar, cinnamon, and cumin.

Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 6 to 8 hours or on high-heat setting for 3 to 4 hours. Stir in 1/4 cup almonds. Sprinkle with additional almonds and serve as a dip with toasted pita wedges.
