Nut Macaroons

Meringue-like macaroons are sometimes called kisses. They were popular around the turn of the century and they're still a favorite Christmas cookie.

  • 1/4  teaspoon  cream of tartarOn Sale
  • 1  cup  sugarOn Sale
  • 1  tablespoon  all-purpose flourOn Sale
  • 2  cups  finely chopped hickory nuts or pecansOn Sale
  •     Desired candied fruit piecesOn Sale

Directions

Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in mixing bowl with an electric mixer until soft peaks form (tips bend over). Gradually add sugar, beating at high speed until stiff peaks form. Fold in flour and nuts.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto a parchment-paper-lined cookie sheet. Bake in a 400 degree F oven for 5 to 7 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 1 to 2 minutes; press a piece of candied fruit into the top of each cookie. Remove and cool on wire rack. Makes about 40 cookies.
