The earliest known printed recipe for the Manhattan was published in O.H. Byron's 1884 Modern Bartenders' Guide, which cites two versions: one made with French vermouth, the other with Italian.

Ingredients

icesee savings

2 ouncesrye whiskeysee savings

-
1 ounceCarpano Antica Formula or other sweet vermouthsee savings

2 dashesAngostura bitterssee savings

1maraschino cherry, for garnishsee savings

Directions
1.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all of the ingredients and stir. Strain the drink into a martini glass or coupe glass and garnish with a marasca cherry.
