Fruit Bowl with a Punch
The zing of serrano peppers in the sugar syrup makes this side dish both sweet and lively.

Ingredients
-
3/4 cup water
-
1/2 cup sugar
-
1 to 2 fresh serrano peppers*, halved lengthwise
-
2 teaspoons finely shredded lime peel (set aside)
-
4 teaspoons lime juice
-
3 cups melon balls (watermelon, cantaloupe, and/or honeydew)
-
1 large apple or pear, cored and cut into chunks
-
2 medium plums, pitted and sliced
Directions
1.
For syrup, in a small saucepan, combine water, sugar, serrano peppers, and lime juice. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 minutes. Remove from heat; cool to room temperature.
2.
Strain syrup into a large serving bowl; discard peppers and seeds. Stir in lime peel. Add melon balls, apple or pear, and plums; stir gently to coat. Cover and chill 1 to 4 hours before serving. Makes 6 servings.
*Note
For a milder flavor, serrano peppers may be omitted.
