As the countdown to Thanksgiving day begins and holiday menus need to be planned, Recipe.com editors start cruising the web for recipe ideas, just like everyone else. Sure, there are some dishes you have to make or you’ll suffer the wrath of certain family members, but there are some places where you can safely mix it up without causing too much of a ruckus.

The best place to seek advice and ideas is our home cooks and their cooking blogs. Though we may find some recipes too “radical” to serve our families (Uncle Fred and pumpkin tapioca is a pretty unlikely combo), these are all dishes we secretly wish we’d be feasting on Thanksgiving Day.

• The Novice Chef’s real-deal Buttermilk Biscuits. There’s a reason southern biscuits have become the stuff of legend, and dinner rolls have not.

• Spoon Fork Bacon’s Heavenly Mashed Potatoes. Oh yes, there’s a secret ingredient that gives them their celestial name.

• No Recipe’s Pumpkin Tapioca (shown above). It’s hard to come up with a pumpkin dessert that can hold it’s own against pie, but this is a contender.

• BitterSweet’s Oysters Rockefeller. A clever, vegetarian riff on the classic using oyster mushrooms instead of shellfish.

• Dessert for Breakfast’s Apple-Cheddar Hand Pies. It’s like holding Thanksgiving in your hand, and the leftovers make a great breakfast on the go.

• Food Blogga’s Minted-Apple-and-Almond-Stuffed Carnival Squash. It proves you don’t need sausage or bacon in every dish on the table to get great flavor.

• Gluten-Free Girl’s Gluten-Free Fresh Pumpkin Pie. Not all pies are created equal, and not all desserts require flour…

• Vegalicious’s Filled Baby Pumpkins. They’re loaded with chestnuts, apples, raisins, and dried cranberries. When vegan food is this good, who needs the turkey?
