Taco Bell Doritos

Taco Bell

It’s official: Taco Bell has struck gold (or would that be radioactive orange?) with its new Doritos Locos Tacos, selling a jaw-dropping, gut-busting 100 million — yes, 100 million — of the $1.29 tacos in just 10 weeks, the Orange County Register reports.

Who knew that in these tough times, the country was just craving a fast-food taco with a shell made from nacho-cheese-flavored Doritos?

Not impressed with Taco Bell’s remarkable feat? It took McDonald’s 18 years to sell 100 million hamburgers after opening its first burger stand, the Register reports, which was “three years after Ray Kroc started his first McDonald’s franchise.”

The massive sales, er, crunch makes the Doritos Locos Tacos the best-selling launch in Taco Bell history, according to the newspaper, besting the 2005 debut of the Crunchwrap Supreme.

Guess a Doritos shell is more coveted than a tostada shell. Wait. We have four words: Dorito Loco Crunchwrap Supreme.

Just a thought.

Anyway, the new taco, called “a flavor pairing just waiting to happen” by Greg Creed, Taco Bell’s CEO, helped raise the restaurant chain’s sales six percent during the first quarter. So, of course, the company plans to keep chipping away at other Doritos dishes, such as a taco with a Cool Ranch shell, the Register adds.

Just please let them stop at shells featuring the more questionable Doritos flavors. Tacos made from Blazin’ Buffalo & Ranch or Smoky Chipotle BBQ — it gives us heartburn just thinking about it.
