The biggest game of the year calls for crowd-friendly food—and if you’re hosting a party, you want to give your guests something that will win you more cheers than the players themselves. Submarine sandwiches are a perfect choice. Is there anyone who wouldn’t jump at the chance to bite into a hearty roll filled with flavorful beef, Italian sausage, or even Portobello mushrooms?
We’ve got seven recipes guaranteed to be a hit on Super Bowl Sunday, from an over-the-top Alfredo beef sandwich to an Italian-style vegetarian sub. Make as much as you can ahead of time, then assemble and serve right before you’re ready to dig in. And don’t skimp on the bread! The difference between a good sub and a great one usually lies in the choice of bread, so it’s worth swinging by your local bakery to pick up some freshly baked sandwich rolls. Then flip on the television, get the drinks chilled, and prepare to be labeled “host of the year.”
It may be Super Bowl, not Oktoberfest, but these Oktoberfest Submarines, pictured above, are perfect with a cold beer. Black Forest Ham, Swiss cheese, honey-roasted turkey (along with red onions, spinach leaves, and even walnuts) are piled high on a crusty baguette or a sub roll.
Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich: This is the top-shelf version of this Philly classic, covered in gooey melted Provolone cheese.
Alfredo Beef Sandwiches: Meatball subs are always a hit. This version uses creamy Alfredo sauce instead of tomato.
Deli-Style Submarines: You can make these deli-style subs ahead of time, then bring them out at halftime.
Sausage-and-Peppers Sandwich: Cut out some of the fat from Italian-style sausage and peppers on a roll by opting for turkey instead of pork.
Prime Rib with Roasted-Garlic Dijonnaise: You can’t do better than prime rib, and this sandwich gets an extra boost from a savory roasted garlic spread.
Open-Face Portobello Sandwiches: Who needs meat when you’ve got hearty, meaty Portobello mushrooms?
