There’s something indescribably delightful about sweet-and-sour chicken — that counter-intuitive combination of flavors runs like a an alternating current on your tongue, setting off a veritable pop-pop-pop of your taste buds like a string of Chinese firecrackers. Sweet-and-sour chicken may long have been one of those meals you’d never dream of making at home; surely there must be some exotic secret to it, right?
Everything that goes into making this slow-cooked sweet-and-sour chicken, with its velvety glaze, can easily be found in your local grocery store. To wit: brown sugar, ketchup and (ready for the surprise?) — frozen lemonade concentrate. Say what!? Yep, that’s the not-so-secret “sour” ingredient here. Set it all simmering in the morning, and come home to a better-than-takeout sweet-and-sour dinner that night. This Saucy Sweet and Sour Chicken can be had for a better-than-takeout price as well: it yields 4–6 servings at about $1.85 per serving.

I made this for the first time yesterday, and for some reason the sauce had a “burnt” taste to it…what can I do to fix that? What would have caused it? I set my crock pot on “low” for 10 hours yesterday, and then it automatically switched over to “warm” for about another hour or so afterwards. PLEASE HELP!!!
Hi Kim,
It sounds like you simply may have cooked it for too long; try cooking it for 6-7 hours on low or 3 hours on high. Hope that helps!
