Easy New Year’s Resolutions: Pop Goes the Healthiest Snack!
Forget the potato chips. Dust off the popcorn popper and you’ll have a zero-cholesterol, whole-grain nosh that’s fun to eat and packed with fiber. Plus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, when you air-pop it, it’s only about 100 to 150 calories for five popped cups. (Popping it with two tablespoons of oil adds about 250 calories).
The latest news — reported at the 2012 meeting of the American Chemical Society — is that popcorn contains more of the healthful antioxidant substances called polyphenols than many fruits and vegetables. Add flavor with a dash of garlic, cayenne pepper or a dusting of Parmesan cheese.
And how about movie popcorn, oozing with fake butter? Forget about it — a large bag is crammed with 1,500 calories and more than a day’s worth of fat.
