No Mincing Words: We Love Mincemeat Pie

Mincemeat is one of those words you hear tossed around a lot during the holidays, but it seems like few cooks know what it is. First of all, here’s what it’s not (at least not anymore): chopped meat. The name is confusing, but trust us—though mincemeat was originally developed as a way to preserve meat, most modern mincemeats don’t contain meat at all. (Though some contain suet, which is basically beef or pork fat used to bind together the fruit.)
Because at its core, that’s what mincemeat is: fruit. A mixture of apples, raisins, currants, candied citrus peel, and sometimes nuts are combined with sugar, spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and sometimes brandy or rum. Sounds delicious, doesn’t it? It is. You can make your own mincemeat (we like this mincemeat recipe from blogger Stephanie Jaworski, at joyofbaking.com), but it’s readily available in jarred form around the holidays. And don’t be afraid to try versions that contain suet! You can’t taste any “meatiness,” just a rich background note that adds dimension to the earthy fruit flavors.
So if you’ve never tried mincemeat, get cooking. We’ve got three great mincemeat recipes perfect for Thanksgiving

“With the death of every friend I love…a part of me has been buried…but their contribution to my being of happiness, strength, and understanding remains to sustain me in an altered world.” – Helen Keller
It might be sad for the “true” Mince Meat pie lovers, but I’ve never eaten the pie because I thought all Mince Meat pies had meat in them. Did not sound appetising to me. Reading some of the recipes that only have the “meat” of the fruits in the pies, actually sounds good. I might try one.
This is so sad. If you want a ‘real’ mincemeat pie, ADD THE MEAT.
