They say the more the merrier, but when it comes to planning for a 4th of July party, last minute invites or unexpected guests can result in anything but merriment.
Luckily for you, we’ve got plenty of quick, delicious side-dish recipes that are the perfect last-minute additions to your 4th of July menu. Whether you’re hosting and discover you don’t have enough, or you score a last-minute invitation to someone else’s cookout, these sides are sure to nip any culinary catastrophes in the bud.
Each of these recipes is especially good with barbecue. Not only that, but they all take less than 30 minutes to prepare, so you can whip them up right before guests arrive (or right before you have to leave for a party).
Regardless of which recipe you choose, your fellow patriots will love you for making these 4th of July sides.
Creamy Coleslaw
Nothing tastes better with barbecue than cool, crunchy coleslaw. This classic recipe showcases the sweet crunch of carrots and celery in a traditional mayonnaise dressing.
Blue Cheese Potato Salad
Tangy blue cheese salad dressing is a perfect topping for this unusual potato salad. We love the addition of green beans to the recipe — for crunch — and the garnish of fresh dill.
Berry-Best Salad
Kids are sure to love this salad, full of fresh berries and their favorite fish-crackers. This is a great way to showcase sweet summer berries at the peak of their ripeness.
Seven-Layer Salad
This quick and fresh salad takes only 30 minutes to prepare, and thanks to plenty of veggies and low-calorie ingredients, it’s as healthy as it is delicious. The dramatic presentation is a great addition to any party table.
Fresh Onion Dip
It’s not a party without dip, and you’ll be sure to impress by making your own. Onion dip is great with everything from potato chips to fresh vegetable strips, so be sure to make plenty.
Watermelon Salad with Feta and Mint
Tangy feta cheese and fresh mint are a surprisingly delicious accompaniment to this beyond-the-slice juicy watermelon salad. You can ball the melon if you have time; if not, cubes work just as well.
Corn Bread
Corn bread tastes great alongside everything from barbecued ribs to chicken, so it’s sure to be a welcome addition at any party. If you’re feeling creative, try the variation with cheddar cheese and chile peppers.
