Tea Party for Two (and Baby Makes Three)

My daughter scored an adorable tea set over the holidays. Which just happened to coincide with a lazy Sunday morning when my little one woke up and decided she liked dolls. From that day forward she has taken “baby” everywhere and cared for that doll like it was her firstborn child. Feeding baby, of course, involves daily tea parties with her tea pot and miniature tea cups all laid out on a proper (and wildly colored) little tea tray. After weeks of giving baby invisible food, though, we decided it was time for a proper “teatime” ritual.

Kids’ tea parties call for bite-size, mess-free snacks that are as colorful as the plates they’re served on. At my daughter’s suggestion (muffins! muffins! muffins!), we made up a batch of mini corn muffins using this yummy Buttermilk Cornbread Recipe. The recipe calls for lots of boiling hot stuff, so my daughter prepared the tea set while I prepared the batter. We poured it into mini-muffin tins, which are cute and also have the added benefit of cooking quite quickly. Fifteen minutes later, my baby, her baby, and I had our first proper tea time—minus the tea, of course. (Apple juice, by the way, makes a cool look-alike substitution).

For our next tea party with baby, maybe we’ll expand on the muffin theme with Banana Crunch Muffins or these blueberry-packed Best Brunch Muffins. Or we could make our tea party a lunch with real tea sandwiches (or just PB&J), and use a cookie cutter to make them into fun shapes (these Pretty Little Tea Sandwiches include recipes for chicken, ham, and egg salad, and they’re shaped like hearts). Turns out baby is giving mom a few ideas of her own.

Teatime with muffins is easy with these muffin recipes!
