Memorial Day is almost here, a day where we remember and celebrate our soldiers. Coming from a military family, I know firsthand the sacrifices our soldiers and servicemen and women make everyday.
Our freedom comes with a price, and I am forever grateful to all of the brave soldiers who make our freedom a reality. There are many families who are left behind during deployment. My father deployed numerous times while I was growing up. My brother-in-law, with three kids, was deployed for 18 months and will be deploying again soon.
Making your kids this fun snack will be a small reminder for them not to take our freedom and country for granted. It’s a lesson we should all learn and never forget.
Ingredients:
1 spinach tortilla
1 small flour tortilla
shredded mozzarella cheese
1 pretzel rod
black olives
To Make Soldier Snack:
Warm a skillet over medium heat. Lay the spinach tortilla in the skillet, sprinkle shredded cheese on half, and fold the tortilla in half. Once cheese is completely melted, put quesadilla on a plate. Lay the flour tortilla inside the hot skillet. Sprinkle cheese across entire surface of the tortilla. Cover the skillet. Once cheese is melted, pull it out of the pan and let cool to warm. Break pretzel rod in half for the helmet straps. Cut an olive in half lengthwise for the eyes. Cut a sliver of olive for the mouth. Assemble and salute!
