How to Coupon: 8 Top Grocery Buys to Save Money and Time

During this hectic time of year, many of us think we are too busy to handle savvy shopping, and we start to rely on unhealthy prepared foods. Not so! I’ve written before that convenience foods don’t save much time. To help you stay on track, check out this list by celebrity health expert Dr. Oz of the 8 Biggest Money and Time Saving items to buy.

1. Frozen soy burgers. These are often on sale, with coupons available, and can be ready to eat in an instant.

2. Chicken thighs. They cost far less than boneless breasts — and they’re often more succulent and tastier, to boot.

3. Frozen vegetables. They won’t spoil like fresh veggies, so you won’t have so much waste, and they’re usually on sale, with coupons available.

4. Canned tomatoes. Also often on sale, they can be used in soups, sauces and chili. Try replacing ketchup with salt-free, sugar-free tomato paste, for a fraction of ketchup’s cost.

5. Eggs. Hard-cooked eggs are a perfect snack or on-the-go breakfast food, and cost a fraction of what breakfast pastries, snack bars or cereals cost.

6. Organic milk is another good protein source that often has coupons available. My store also frequently offers combo deals with milk (buy three boxes of cereal, get a milk credit).

7. Brown rice. Buy microwaveable rice, or cook a big batch on Sunday and reheat throughout the week. Either way, it’s far cheaper and healthier than boxed rice side dishes.

8. Store-brand/generic puffed brown rice. Substitute for expensive breakfast cereals.

Keep these items on hand, and you’ll have all you need to make affordable, quick (and healthy) meals, so you can stay shopping savvy until the new year!
