Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, an observance created to honor all of our active military. So I’d like to revisit how to use our expired coupons to help out military families.

Members of our military posted overseas are allowed to use manufacturer’s coupons for up to six months beyond their expiration dates at commissaries. Note that this is only for overseas postings, not domestic, and that not all bases participate. Click here for a list of bases that still need coupon “adoption.”

If you don’t have time to organize and ship old coupons each month, consider forming a group in your community and sharing shipping duties. Another possibility: check with your local American Legion Auxiliary, as many of them coordinate coupon efforts.

There are also groups throughout the country who will gladly accept your coupons and ship to their adopted bases.  Last fall, I wrote about the Krazy Koupon Lady’s amazing team of volunteers. ECOM is another volunteer group — visit their Facebook page for information. Yet another group is CoupsforTroops. They have a special way of operating because they match coupons donors directly with specific families.  If that appeals to you, check them out.

Who knows, with all the money you save couponing, maybe you’ll be able to travel to a faraway land and meet your adopted military family someday!
