Healthy Hot Chocolate Mix

As the weather turns cooler, hot chocolate makes a great treat for kids (and adults), and it’s easy to make your own “instant” hot chocolate mix. The best part is, the homemade version doesn’t contain all the hydrogenated oils and artificial sweeteners you’ll find in store-bought mixes.
Mix together 2 cups powdered milk, 2/3 cup sugar, 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Store in an airtight container. To make a cup of hot chocolate, put 1/4 cup of mix into a mug, fill with boiling water, and stir until thoroughly blended.
More hot-chocolate tips:
- To maximize the health benefits, be sure to use regular cocoa powder, not “dutch-process.” Regular cocoa powder contains more of the flavanols that make chocolate so good for you.
- To make a mix that’s lower in sugar, replace the sugar with a sugar/stevia blend such as Sun Crystals. (Check the package for substitution instructions.)
- For a sweet-and-spicy treat, add 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon and/or 1 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper to the recipe.

I like to use equal parts water, coconut water, and almond milk with my unsweetened coco. This makes for a delicious, hot, Almond Mounds Joy flavored drink.
Give in a pretty jar as a gift
I have done this for years, except I do not add the powdered milk. We just use 2 tbls of the mix, the kids add hot milk, I use hot water.
