You can speak of sweeping tax plan overhauls, “joke” about erecting an electric fence on the Mexican border and tell Occupy Wall Street protestors it’s their own fault they’re jobless. But mess with John Lennon lyrics? Herman Cain, you may have just met political suicide.

In what we can only refer to as Pizza-Gate, Herman Cain, Tea Party fave for the 2012 presidential nomination and former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, surely would have preferred a pie in the face to the release of a 1991 video showing him sing about pizza pies to the tune of the Lennon classic “Imagine.”

Oh, the humanity.

The Omaha World-Herald posted a video of Cain’s 1991 performance – why, yes, that is a choir robe he’s wearing — at an Omaha Press Club show, and it quickly went viral.

American voters will forgive a multitude of sins, missteps and improprieties. But butcher the lyrics of the smart Beatle while pleading to “give pizza a chance?” We have two words: Laughing. Stock.

Think we’re making a mountain out of a molehill? (Or is that a school out of an anchovy?) Oh, just read the – ahem – extra cheesy lyrics for yourselves (below). The “Saturday Night Live” writing team can go ahead and take this week off.
