Grapefruit—nutritious but no miracle fat-burner: Real Healthy

Grapefruit RecipesRemember the Grapefruit Diet?  Proponents of this popular fad claimed grapefruit contains a special compound that triggered fat-burning and weight loss. All you had to do was eat a half-grapefruit before every meal, and the pounds would just melt away! (Well,  you also had to cut your meal sizes in half and exercise every day, but let’s not quibble over the details.)

Deep down, we all know that there are no miracle foods that burn fat, don’t we?  But just in case you were hanging on to that hope, a new study puts the grapefruit diet myth to rest once and for all.  Although cutting back on portion sizes and high-calorie foods will definitely lead to weight loss, eating a grapefruit with every meal won’t speed the process.

That said, grapefruits are low in calories and sugar and high in vitamin C and fiber.  They’re also delicious — especially when paired with contrasting flavors and textures, such as in this  classic avocado and grapefruit salad.  This particular combo also offers a skin-saving bonus.  The combination of vitamin C (from grapefruit) and vitamin E (from avocado) protects the skin from damaging and aging effects of UV rays — from the inside!

One last caveat: Although it doesn’t posses a miraculous fat-burning ingredient, grapefruit does contain a compound that slows the enzymatic breakdown of certain medications — especially cholesterol-lowering drugs. If you take any regular medications, be sure to check with your pharmacist or doctor to confirm that it’s okay for you to include grapefruit or grapefruit juice in your diet. • I know this web site provides quality depending posts and extra information, is there any other
web site which provides such things in quality?

  • I was going to a place called Impressions Spa,
and there, they have body slimming wraps,
and firming wraps to tighten your skin when
you lose weight from the slimming wraps. Do the results from the slimming wraps stay?
If they do, do they get rid of fat? or something else?
on the site, it says that it doesn’t get rid of water weight, which is good, but gets rid of toxics that are around fat cells and I dont get that. Should I go there for the slimming wraps or should I just not go at all?.

  • Duane Bidez says:

The 1929 Ruby Red patent was associated with real commercial success, which came after the discovery of a red grapefruit growing on a pink variety. Only with the introduction of the Ruby Red did the grapefruit transform into a real agricultural success.”

    All the best to you

  • I’ve been browsing online greater than 3 hours as of late, yet I by no means found any interesting article like yours. It is beautiful price enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the web will likely be much more useful than ever before.

  • Good memory, Jim! I think it was only one (human) study…but isn’t that ironic that, although grapefruit appears to lower cholesterol, most people on cholesterol lowering medications are advised to avoid grapefruit because of the effect on medication!

  • Jim says:

Another potential benefit- I remember reading about several studies a few years ago that suggested red grapefruit are surprisingly effective at lowering LDL cholesterol (nearly as good as statins).
