Get Ready for Eggnog Withdrawal

The holiday season is winding down, and with it, our last chance to enjoy that one-of-a-kind smooth and creamy, bewitching concoction known as eggnog. But wait a minute, if eggnog is so good, what can’t we enjoy it all year long?
Well, as Slate reports, people won’t buy it. Simple as that. Don’t get us wrong: eggnog is hugely popular — even more so today than it was back when Bing Crosby was singing about white Christmases. (Sales of eggnog have increased fourfold in the last 50 years.) But it’s only popular during the holidays. Folks start buying up eggnog toward the end of October, according to Slate, really get on the eggnog train in November, make some 20 percent of annual eggnog purchases the week before Christmas, then sales drop by half before New Year’s Day. After that—bam!—no more buying of the nog.
Slate points out that eggnog certainly could be produced all year long, but that “off-season eggnog is a big hassle, and would appropriate resources from products that dairy makers know will sell — for example, white milk and chocolate milk, which have consistent demand throughout the year.”
Apparently, there’s also a correlation between eggnog sales and the weather: the colder the climate, the higher the eggnog sales, even during the winter holiday season. We guess that makes sense. Darting inside for an steamy sip of eggnog after spending the afternoon running around in the heat probably wouldn’t exactly be classified as thirst-quenching.
However, for you die-hard nog-heads out there, it is possible to find a carton of eggnog or two come spring. Slate reports Dean Foods makes an Easter eggnog, available in a couple of markets.
May we also suggest a Fourth of July nog? Dye it a festive red! Maybe a Mother’s Day nog? Made extra sweet, just like mom. Or perhaps a chilled, alcohol-laden Labor Day nog? Served stiff for the working stiffs!
Of course, you can also just make your own eggnog year-round. Just file away these great recipes:
