Frosty mornings fairly cry out for a good French toast recipe. You may have to content yourself with cold cereal and a container of yogurt for breakfast during the busy workweek, but come a chilly winter’s weekend, there’s no reason not to take things a bit slower. Pancakes are good; waffles even better. But something about the combination of good bread soaked in an eggy batter and either baked or fried makes us swoon.
We have no idea why the French get the credit for French toast. The dish likely originated in Ancient Rome (long before there even was a France) — a description of bread slices soaked in milk and beaten eggs then fried and covered in honey appears as early as the first century A.D. Two millennia hence, there’s been a staggering proliferation of French toast recipes, ranging from nice (heart-healthy, baked French toast) to eminently naughty (French toast soaked in cream and decadently stuffed with cream cheese). Whether you’re in the mood for innocence or indulgence, one of these French toast recipes is sure to satisfy.
