In a complicated, busy world, it’s nice to know that some simple pleasures never change. Fresh-baked cookies are a perfect example. In an afternoon, you can whip up a batch of your favorites, serve them with a tall glass of cold milk, and — voilà! — life suddenly gets a little bit sweeter. Indeed, milk and cookies have an almost magical ability to turn cranky, tired kids, just home from school, into happy little people.

In addition to their uncanny mood-altering powers, homemade cookies are a great way to showcase your creativity. Here are some of our favorite classic recipes,  such as oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, peanut butter, and snickerdoodle, but once you’ve got the recipe down, you can tweak them to your own preferences.

Do you like walnuts in your chocolate chip cookies? Add ‘em! Or how about trying golden raisins in your oatmeal raisin cookies? With a little experimentation, you’re on your way to “inventing” your own secret recipe to be passed down to the next generation. But even if you stick closely to the recipe as is, we guarantee that these cookies will become family favorites. If only everything were so easy!
