Anti-Cheese Billboards: Should We Be Cheesed Off?

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Thank goodness no one from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and its obesity-watchdog team was at our Super Bowl party. See, the group thinks cheese is one big ol’ gooey (might we add delicious?) reason Americans are getting so fat, NPR reports.
Let’s see here: We had pizza dip loaded with melted mozzarella. And a shrimp-and-cream-cheese spread. We dined on chili topped with cheddar. And practically shoveled cheesecake brownies down our gullets. OK, so perhaps the PCRM may have a point—which is why we’ll be making a date with Shaun T. and his “Insanity” workout this afternoon.
But a war on cheese? Sorry, that just stinks as much as a giant chunk of Camembert.
“Cheese and other dairy products are the leading source of saturated fat that our kids are swallowing,” the PCRM’s Neal Barnard tells NPR. “And I think most Americans are totally oblivious to it.”
To draw attention, the group posted billboards in Albany, N.Y., featuring pictures with—well, cottage cheese thighs—and the words “Your thighs on cheese.” Yummy. The PCRM also attempted to run anti-cheese ads in dairy-loving Wisconsin and, yeah, you can just imagine the response they met there.
Barnard goes on to tell the media organization that people should cut the cheese from their diets entirely. Like, forever. As in, no cheese. Ever.
Oh, the humanity!
Instead, Barnard tells NPR, Americans should opt for a vegan diet and vegan cheese alternatives. We’re just gonna say it: No cheese is better than vegan cheese.
And, so, we must align ourselves with Antonin Baudry, a cultural counselor at the French Embassy, who tells NPR cheese is a treat to be savored.
“We believe in cheese,” Baudry tells NPR. “It’s like a religion.”
Kinda like eating your way through nachos, mozzarella sticks and seven-layer dip on Super Bowl Sunday.
Cheese or no cheese, healthy eating will do you and your body good. Try these healthy recipes.

I’m with Bernadette, it’s more big government in your face.
Cheese has been around for centuries, and you really think it’s making us fat Justine?? No, it’s our sedentary lifestyles and all the processed food we buy off the shelf. If you want to stay healthy, stick to the deli, dairy and produce sections of the grocery store. How many ingredients are in most of the foods in your cupboard?? 25-50. Ingredients in cheese? Three. Milk, vinegar and salt. It IS all about moderation.
Wow. First of all Bernadette you sound ridiculous. Nobody is TELLING you what to do. These are recommendations supported by science and cold hard facts. Being vegan or eating meat or not is a choice. Cheese is making people fat. You can ignore that fact and inhale the stuff if you want to. Personally I’m glad there are physicians out there willing to tell us the hard truths. The truth is Americans are getting HUGE. We need to know more about our diets. It’s called being informed so we can make the best possible decision.
I an sick and tired of the government and doctors tell me how to live my life. Everything in moderation is fine, and if not.. at least I will live my life the way I want to. I will not be told what to do as an adult. Last time I looked this was still America and we are free to do what we want.
My comment is : they will take my cheese out of my cold dead fingers! Also I think it’s extremely funny that the banner ad at the top of this article is an ad for Velveeta.
