A Bounty of Blueberries: Cakes, Muffins, Jams & More!

This week saw my first visit to the pick-your-own blueberry farm near here. Well, actually, my second visit — I went out there last month to pick strawberries. I have to say, picking blueberries is easier because there’s so much less bending over and crawling along on your face. Also, blueberries don’t squish as easily when they’re piled up. One day I want to replace all the ugly plantings around the foundation of my house with blueberry bushes.

At this time of year I always remember the family story about my great-uncle Ralph, who went on his first berrying jaunt at age two and a half. (This would have been around 1903.)  After an hour or so, it was discovered that Ralph had exactly one berry in his pail. Asked about this, he said, “I had two, but one wolled out.”

Whether you’re pickin’ or buyin’, you won’t want to let any blueberries “woll out” for these recipes. You need them all!
