Ingredients
  • 1   cup
    liquid (water, milk, chicken or vegetable stock, half-and-half, heavy cream, or any combination of these)*

    salt

    stone-ground grits

  • 1   tablespoon
    butter

  • 2   tablespoons
    shredded Cheddar cheese or grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Directions
1.
In a saucepan, combine liquid and salt; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add grits, stirring to combine. Reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring frequently, for 25 to 30 minutes, or until grits are thickened and creamy.

Remove grits from heat and let stand for 5 minutes. Add butter and cheese, if desired, stirring to melt.
3.
*For everyday, we suggest half water and half milk. For special occasions, try half cream and half chicken stock. Add a little more liquid if you like your grits soupy, a little less if you like them very thick.
